Five years ago my running routine was a bit flaky. That’s when parkrun entered my life.
A feel good, surefire way to soak up community spirit and embrace all that running has to offer. A cult-like community of unlikely running partners.
The parkrun concept is simple: meet at one of 2,000 parkrun events in 22 countries across 6 continents, at 9am on Saturday, and walk, jog or run your way to 5km with like-minded souls.
To say parkrun is inclusive is an understatement.
A weekly show of enormous public altruism the UK over, everyone is welcome and clapped their way round. All ages. All abilities.
No profit. Just purpose. And bucketloads of volunteer-led passion.
I wanted to write this article as a public display of affection for parkrun. Part “thank you”, part hope that it inspires others to try their local parkrun. Or even help out as a volunteer.
I’ll share my favourite parkrun, some fun parkrun challenges, and the full alphabetical list of all UK parkruns, so you can find your local parkrun.
What is parkrun?
Started in 2004, parkrun is a free weekly community run, taking place every Saturday morning at 9am.
Parkrunners only compete with themselves and can take part however they please – walk, jog, run, volunteer, or support from the sidelines.
Every runner is pre-registered and race times recorded, but only for their own benefit. Parkrun recently ditched speed records in a bid to become more welcoming. Of course, you can attempt your own new parkrun PB or simply start your weekend with some fun physical exercise. The average parkrun time is just shy of 30 mins.
junior parkrun is a smaller (2k) family-focused run for 4-14 year olds, every Sunday morning.
Each parkrun event follows the same template – the pre-run briefing, run and dash for the finish line, scanning your unique barcode on the parkrun app.
How many UK parkruns are there?
There are over 1,200 UK parkrun events and counting, with more being set up all the time.
At the time of writing a whopping 3,000,000 runners had completed 250,000 UK parkruns.
UK parkruns are on every conceivable terrain and backdrop – racecourses, historical sites, nature reserves, woodlands, parks… even beaches!
What I love about parkrun
- The volunteers – a weekly show of enormous public altruism the UK over
- Community spirit – the inherent goodness and chorus of clapping
- Running en masse – gives you more energy than you could muster alone
- Easy act of self care – bite-sized public health benefits of jogging, and for free!
- Sets you up for the weekend – what better way to start the weekend
- Like clockwork – comforting in its regularity and mini rituals, whatever the weather
- Festive special – running parkrun on Christmas Day, complete with Santa fancy dress (pictured below)
- Attracts all ages – I’ve been overtaken by children and grandparents
- A nice crowd – kindred spirits only looking to better themselves and their 5km PBs
- A national institution – the cultural affection felt for parkrun events
- The variety of courses – historical ruins, nature reserves, beaches, and more turn into playgrounds
- Keeps things interesting – the perfect tonic if you’re thinking “Why is running hard?“
- A good entry point into running – every marathon runner started somewhere!
Fountains Abbey parkrun – the UK’s most beautiful parkrun
My search for the most inspiring parkrun ended on 8 April 2023. The day I did the Fountains Abbey parkrun.
Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved monastic ruins in England, making for a breathtaking backdrop to your run. It can be found two miles west of Ripon, North Yorkshire.
The parkrun takes you through the Abbey’s spectacular Georgian water gardens, Studley Royal. Designed by John Aislabie, this water garden gives Fountains Abbey its World Heritage status. Even the 10 minute walk down to the start line from the car park is a feast for the eyes.
This awe-inspiring parkrun consists of two laps around the abbey and its river and ponds.
Starting from Huby’s Tower at the Abbey, the first lap is a little shorter. The lawn path guides you round the arched bridge and Half Moon pond, following the River Skell and crossing back past the Abbey, and the West Lawn.
The end of the first 360 degree loop is the best views of Fountains Abbey, in my opinion – the meandering river and the lawn in the foreground, trees on either side, and the striking eastern face of the abbey poking through (pictured below).
Lap two is deceptively longer, taking you past the first bridge to see more of the Water Gardens. You cross an extremely narrow wooden bridge with no sides, which cuts through the river. The bridge deposits you to a perfectly manicured path which leads you to a wooded area with the steepest incline I’ve ever experienced at a parkrun. The reward being yet more stunning views.
Today, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal are managed by National Trust, meaning running Fountains Abbey parkrun saves you the £18 entry fee. The café is also free to use before Fountains Abbey officially opens to paying visitors for the day.
I recommend making the most of the free entry to Fountains Abbey by exploring its ruins as part of your warm down. A fitting end (see: Peak End Rule) to a stunning parkrun.
Parkrun challenges
Belting out the same 5km every Saturday isn’t enough for some people. Take part in these parkrun challenges to keep running fun and see more of the UK on foot.
Due to the strains on local events, Parkrun HQ wish to deter people from challenges that directly encourage mass attendance at a specific course on a specific day.
Parkrun tourism
Not all parkrun locations are equal. Parkrun tourism involves traveling to complete as many different types of parkruns as possible. There’s tons of inspiring routes to choose from, including: country parks, riversides and reservoirs, historical ruins, coastal paths, forest trails, and more.
This speaks to me a lot. If there’s a unusual race, such as Marathon Du Malton (the UK’s tastiest fun run with food and booze stops), I’ll be there!
Parkrun milestone clubs
Parkrun, like any form of running, is addictive. Every event is littered with seasoned parkrunners sporting the following official parkrun milstone t-shirts:
- 10 Club (children who complete ten 5k parkruns before their 18th birthday)
- 50 Club (anyone who completes 50 5k parkruns)
- 100 Club (anyone who completes 100 5k parkruns)
- 250 Club (anyone who completes 250 5k parkruns)
- 500 Club (anyone who completes 500 5k parkruns)
Parkrun Alphabet
Theparkrun Alphabet challenge involves trying to complete a parkrun beginning with every letter of the alphabet.
The 24 letters in the parkrun UK Alphabet is actually harder than it sounds, involving trips up and down the country in England, Scotland and Wales.
